Zeenat Aman Says Industry Focused On Her Appearance And Demanded Revealing Scenes

Zeenat Aman recalls being objectified in film industry.

Veteran Bollywood actor Zeenat Aman has reflected on the challenges of being labelled a "sex symbol" during the peak of her career, saying that filmmakers often focused more on her physical appearance than her acting abilities. Speaking in an interview on Shubra Aiyappa's YouTube channel, the 75-year-old actor said there was a stark contrast between her public image and her real personality, adding that she was frequently offered roles that emphasised glamour over substance.

Recalling her journey in Hindi cinema during the 1970s and 1980s, Zeenat said she struggled with the perception that had come to define her career. "I always found that there was such disparity between what was projected about me, and the person that I truly was. The sex symbol tag stayed with me for a very long time. When people would meet me, they would realise that I was truly nothing like the characters I portrayed," she said. According to the actor, the image created around her often overshadowed her personality and limited the way filmmakers viewed her.

Zeenat also revealed that many filmmakers were primarily interested in presenting her as a glamorous screen presence rather than exploring her range as a performer. Recalling interactions on film sets, she said directors would often ask for costumes with more revealing necklines or make comments suggesting they wanted to highlight her physical appearance. Referring to one such experience, she said the emphasis was frequently on showing "more cleavage," with remarks such as "Bheegegi barish mein" reflecting the industry's approach to portraying her on screen.

The actor rose to prominence with a series of commercially successful films and became one of Bollywood's most recognisable stars, known for bringing a modern and confident image to Hindi cinema. While her bold roles broke several conventions of the era and made her a style icon, Zeenat suggested that the same image also became a professional limitation, as she was repeatedly cast in similar roles instead of being offered more varied characters.

In recent years, Zeenat Aman has gained renewed popularity through her candid social media posts, where she shares personal anecdotes, reflections on ageing, relationships and the film industry. Her openness has resonated with younger audiences, who have praised her for offering thoughtful insights into her experiences both on and off the screen. She has often spoken about navigating fame, overcoming personal challenges and redefining herself beyond the labels attached to her during her acting career.

Zeenat's latest remarks add to the ongoing conversation about the treatment of women in the entertainment industry and the pressures faced by actresses who were often defined by their appearance. By reflecting on her own experiences, she highlighted the gap between public perception and reality, while underscoring the importance of recognising performers for their talent rather than reducing them to a single on-screen image. Her comments have sparked renewed discussion about how female actors have been portrayed in Bollywood and how those perceptions have evolved over the decades.
