Stampede Case Proceedings: Allu Arjun Appears Virtually Before Court

Allu Arjun appears virtually in stampede case proceedings.

Actor Allu Arjun appeared virtually before the Nampally court on Monday in connection with the Sandhya Theatre stampede case linked to the special screening of Pushpa 2: The Rule, which was held on December 4, 2024. The appearance marks a key procedural development in the ongoing legal proceedings arising from the tragic incident that occurred during the film’s premiere event in Hyderabad. The actor’s legal counsel had filed a petition seeking permission for him to attend the court hearing through audio-video electronic means, citing procedural and logistical considerations.

After reviewing the request, the court granted permission, allowing Allu Arjun to participate in the proceedings virtually. Among the 23 accused named in the case, he was the only one permitted to appear via video conferencing, while the remaining accused either attended the hearing physically or were absent on the day of proceedings. The case relates to an incident that took place at Sandhya Theatre on the night of December 4, 2024, when a large crowd gathered following the arrival of the actor for the special screening of Pushpa 2: The Rule.

According to the prosecution, the gathering escalated rapidly, leading to a stampede-like situation at the venue. The sudden surge of people reportedly resulted in chaos outside the theatre premises, with inadequate crowd control measures cited as a contributing factor. In the incident, a woman identified as M Revathi lost her life, while her son, Sri Tej, sustained serious injuries. Emergency personnel at the scene attempted to administer first aid, including CPR, but Revathi could not be revived.

Sri Tej was subsequently shifted to a nearby hospital for advanced medical treatment and remained under care for several months before being discharged. The incident drew widespread attention and raised concerns regarding safety arrangements at large-scale public events involving prominent film personalities. Authorities later initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the stampede. The Chikkadapally police registered a case under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections relating to culpable homicide, attempt to commit culpable homicide, abetment, common intention, negligent act, and negligent conduct.

The inclusion of multiple charges reflects the seriousness with which investigators are examining potential lapses in planning, crowd management, and event execution. As part of the legal proceedings, multiple individuals connected to the event have been named as accused. The case currently lists 23 accused persons, with varying levels of alleged involvement under scrutiny. The court proceedings are focused on assessing responsibility, examining procedural compliance, and evaluating evidence submitted by both the prosecution and defence teams.

During Monday’s hearing, procedural matters were taken up, and the court recorded appearances and submissions. The virtual appearance of Allu Arjun was permitted as a special arrangement, reflecting the judiciary’s flexibility in accommodating electronic participation in ongoing cases where necessary. The incident has since become a reference point in discussions around public safety at entertainment events, particularly those involving high-profile celebrities who attract large crowds.

It has also prompted calls for stricter enforcement of crowd control protocols, clearer coordination between event organisers and law enforcement agencies, and enhanced risk assessment before granting permissions for mass gatherings. Further hearings in the case are expected in the coming weeks as the court continues to examine evidence and statements from witnesses and investigating officers. The outcome of the proceedings will be closely watched, given the prominence of the individuals involved and the broader implications for event safety regulations in the entertainment industry.
