Shocking Set Incident Halts Emily in Paris Season 5 Filming!

Emily in Paris Season 5 filming halted after assistant director dies on set.

The production of Emily in Paris Season 5 has been struck by tragedy following the sudden death of assistant director Diego Borella, aged 47, during filming in Venice, Italy. Borella collapsed on Thursday, August 21, 2025, around 7:00 pm local time while preparations were underway for a scene at the historic Hotel Danieli. Despite efforts by on-set medical staff to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene, with a local doctor citing a sudden heart attack as the likely cause of death, according to Italian news outlets La Repubblica, Il Messaggero, and Corriere della Sera.

A Paramount Television Studios spokesperson expressed profound grief, stating, “We are deeply saddened to confirm the sudden passing of a member of the Emily in Paris production family. Our hearts go out to the individual’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.” Following the incident, filming for the Netflix series’ fifth season was temporarily suspended but resumed on Saturday, August 23, 2025.

Borella, a respected Venetian filmmaker trained in Rome, London, and New York, was a locally hired third assistant director for the show. His career also spanned visual arts and literature, and he had recently joined the Emily in Paris team for its Italian shoot. The tragedy occurred just days after lead actress Lily Collins shared behind-the-scenes glimpses from Venice on Instagram, announcing the season’s December 18, 2025, premiere with the caption, “The countdown officially begins, with a first look and release date for @emilyinparis SEASON FIVE! Emily’s Italian adventure continues, from cobblestones to canals, on December 18th.”

The upcoming season, created by Darren Star, follows Emily Cooper, played by Collins, as she navigates her role as head of Agence Grateau Rome. The official synopsis details professional and romantic challenges, noting, “Just as everything falls into place, a work idea backfires, and the fallout cascades into heartbreak and career setbacks. Seeking stability, Emily leans into her French lifestyle until a big secret threatens one of her closest relationships. Tackling conflict with honesty, Emily emerges with deeper connections, renewed clarity, and a readiness to embrace new possibilities.”

As the Emily in Paris team mourns Borella’s loss, the incident casts a somber shadow over the highly anticipated season, set to debut on Netflix on December 18, 2025.
