Scorsese & DiCaprio’s New Thriller Promises Chills in What Happens at Night
Scorsese and DiCaprio reunite for eerie thriller What Happens at Night.
Hollywood icons Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio are set to collaborate on What Happens at Night, a feature film adaptation of Peter Cameron’s acclaimed novel, with Apple Original Films in discussions to finance and produce alongside Studiocanal.
The project marks another milestone in the storied partnership between Scorsese and DiCaprio, whose previous collaborations include critically acclaimed films like Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Killers of the Flower Moon, also backed by Apple.
The film will reunite DiCaprio with Jennifer Lawrence, his co-star from Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up. According to Variety, Studiocanal acquired the novel’s rights in 2023, with Scorsese attached as producer and Oscar-nominated screenwriter Patrick Marber (Notes on a Scandal) penning the screenplay.
The story follows an American couple who journey to a remote, snowy European city to adopt a baby. Their stay at a vast, nearly deserted hotel introduces them to a bizarre cast of characters, including a flamboyant chanteuse, a corrupt businessman, and a magnetic faith healer. As they navigate this eerie, frozen landscape to claim their child, the couple’s sense of identity and reality begins to unravel.
This project adds to Scorsese and DiCaprio’s ongoing ventures, including their long-developing adaptation of Erik Larson’s The Devil in the White City. DiCaprio is also awaiting the release of One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, while Lawrence will star in Die, My Love alongside Robert Pattinson, with Scorsese producing and Lynne Ramsay directing.
What Happens at Night promises to deliver the signature intensity and psychological depth of a Scorsese-DiCaprio collaboration, captivating audiences with its unsettling narrative.
