Robert Downey Jr. Explains Why 'Doctor Doom' Excites Him More Than 'Iron Man'
Robert Downey Jr. reveals his preference for playing Doctor Doom.
Robert Downey Jr, who became one of the defining stars of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Tony Stark, has revealed that he currently prefers playing Doctor Doom to Iron Man. Robert made the comment while discussing his return to the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday, where he will portray the iconic villain after previously playing Iron Man for more than a decade.
Tony Stark's story ended in Avengers: Endgame in 2019, when the character made the ultimate sacrifice during the battle against Thanos. Robert's return to the MCU was announced years later, but this time he is taking on a completely different role as Doctor Doom. The casting has generated considerable interest because of the contrast between his beloved superhero character and one of Marvel's major villains.
Speaking about the two roles during D23, Robert explained that Doctor Doom has allowed him to experience the MCU from a different perspective. He noted that while playing Iron Man, he was accustomed to being surrounded by the other heroes, whereas portraying Doom meant observing them from a different position. Robert indicated that the change has given him an opportunity to appreciate the wider ensemble in a way he had not experienced before.

Marvel Studios has also offered fans a fresh look at Avengers: Doomsday, with footage presented during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. The footage features a tense exchange between Pedro Pascal's Reed Richards and Robert's Doctor Doom. Reed questions Doom about his actions, while Doom responds by accusing the heroes of living stolen lives, setting up a potentially significant conflict between the characters.
Avengers: Doomsday features a large ensemble cast, including Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Wyatt Russell, Channing Tatum, Simu Liu, Ian McKellen, Hayley Atwell, Tom Hiddleston, James Marsden, Patrick Stewart, Joseph Quinn and Sebastian Stan. The cast also includes several returning MCU and Marvel characters, adding to expectations surrounding the upcoming film.
For Robert, the move from Iron Man to Doctor Doom represents a major change in his MCU journey. While Tony Stark remains one of his most recognisable roles, his comments indicate that playing Doom has offered a different creative experience. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to release on December 18 and will mark a new chapter for Robert within the Marvel franchise.
