Moana Box Office Collection Day 1: Disney Film Records Slow India Opening

Live-action Moana opens slowly at Indian box office.

Disney’s live-action adaptation of Moana has recorded a slow opening at the Indian box office, earning an estimated Rs 0.6 crore net on its first day of release. The musical adventure film, released in 3D format, opened across 1,692 shows nationwide and registered an overall theatre occupancy of around 9.9 per cent, according to Sacnilk data.

The English version contributed the majority of the opening-day earnings, collecting approximately Rs 0.5 crore net from 1,082 shows with an occupancy rate of 11 per cent. The Hindi version recorded earnings of around Rs 0.1 crore net from 610 shows, with an occupancy of nearly 8 per cent. The film’s India gross collection stood at around Rs 0.72 crore after its first day.

Moana is a 2026 American musical adventure film and a live-action remake of Disney’s 2016 animated hit of the same name. The film marks the feature directorial debut of Thomas Kail and is based on a screenplay by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller. It is produced by Dwayne Johnson, Hiram Garcia, Dany Garcia, Beau Flynn and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The film stars Catherine Laga’aia in her feature film debut as Moana, while Dwayne Johnson returns as the demigod Maui, reprising the role he voiced in the animated films. The supporting cast includes Rena Owen, John Tui, Frankie Adams and Jemaine Clement, who returns as the voice of Tamatoa.

Released in the United States on July 10, 2026, the live-action adaptation follows Moana, the daughter of the chief of Motunui, who embarks on a journey after being chosen by the ocean to restore the heart of the goddess Te Fiti. She teams up with Maui, a powerful demigod, to return the stolen heart and save her people.

Despite the popularity of the original animated film, the live-action version has started with limited earnings in India. The film’s performance over the coming days will depend on audience response, word of mouth and competition from other releases in theatres.
