Madras High Court Restrains 'Drishyam 3' Telugu Version on OTT Over Disputed Remake Rights
Court blocks Telugu-dubbed Drishyam 3 on OTT over rights dispute.
The Madras High Court has issued an interim injunction restraining the makers of Drishyam 3 from releasing its Telugu-dubbed version on OTT platforms, just a day before its scheduled digital premiere. The order came in response to a petition filed by film production company Rajkumar Theatre Pvt Ltd, which claimed it holds rights connected to the Telugu adaptation of the popular Malayalam franchise.
The legal dispute stems from the original Drishyam (2013), directed by Jeethu Joseph and starring Mohanlal. The film became a landmark success for Malayalam cinema, emerging as the industry's first movie to cross Rs 50 crore at the worldwide box office. Its widespread popularity led to official remakes in several Indian languages, including Telugu, where it was released as Drushyam in 2014.
Rajkumar Theatre Pvt Ltd argued before the court that it had acquired the Telugu remake rights for the original film and, therefore, retained interests that could be affected by the release of a Telugu-dubbed version of Drishyam 3. The company is headed by Rajkumar Sethupathi, who secured the remake rights and, on the suggestion of Kamal Haasan, brought actor Venkatesh on board for the Telugu adaptation directed by Sripriya.

The High Court's interim order temporarily prevents the Telugu-dubbed version from streaming on OTT platforms until the rights dispute is examined further. While the Malayalam version's release remains unaffected, the injunction creates uncertainty over the availability of the dubbed edition for Telugu-speaking audiences awaiting the film's digital debut.
The case highlights the complex nature of intellectual property and remake agreements in the Indian film industry, where separate rights for remakes, dubbing, theatrical distribution and digital streaming are often held by different entities. Such overlapping agreements can lead to legal challenges when new versions of successful franchises are released across multiple languages and platforms.
With the matter now before the Madras High Court, the future of Drishyam 3's Telugu OTT release will depend on the outcome of the ongoing legal proceedings. The court's decision is expected to clarify the scope of remake and dubbing rights and could have wider implications for multilingual film releases and digital distribution strategies in the Indian entertainment industry.
