‘Killing Me Softly’ singer Roberta Flack dies at 88

Roberta Flack, the iconic Grammy-winning soul singer has passed away at the age of 88.

Roberta Flack, the iconic Grammy-winning soul singer celebrated for her emotive renditions of romantic ballads like “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” has passed away at the age of 88, according to her publicist. She died peacefully at her home, surrounded by family, following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a condition that had silenced her singing voice in recent years.

"We are heartbroken that the glorious Roberta Flack passed away this morning, February 24, 2025," said a statement from her representatives.

"She died peacefully surrounded by her family. Roberta broke boundaries and records. She was also a proud educator."

Born in Black Mountain, North Carolina, and raised in Arlington, Virginia, Flack’s musical journey began early with classical piano training, leading to a scholarship at Howard University where she earned a degree in music education. Initially drawn to classical music, Flack pivoted to pop and soul after encouragement from a voice teacher and her breakthrough at Mr. Henry’s club in Washington, DC.

Her debut album, “First Take” (1969), featuring the hauntingly beautiful rendition of “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” propelled her to stardom, winning Record of the Year in 1973. This success marked the start of a stellar career that included hits like “Where Is the Love” with Donny Hathaway and “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” where she also took on producing duties under her alter ego, Rubina Flake.

Beyond her chart-topping singles and Grammy wins, Flack’s music addressed broader social issues, from racial injustice to economic inequality, showcasing her commitment to meaningful storytelling. Her influence spanned generations, inspiring artists like Lauryn Hill and the Fugees, who famously covered “Killing Me Softly” in 1996.

Roberta Flack’s passing leaves behind a rich musical legacy that transcends genres and continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.
