Jury Finds Bill Cosby Liable For 1972 Assault, Awards $60 Million to Victim

Jury finds Cosby liable for 1972 assault, awards damages.

A jury in Los Angeles has found that comedian Bill Cosby sexually assaulted a woman at the Playboy Mansion in 1972, awarding her nearly $60 million in damages. The verdict marks one of the most significant civil rulings against the once-celebrated entertainer, who has faced numerous allegations of sexual misconduct spanning decades.

The plaintiff, identified as Judy Huth, filed the lawsuit alleging that she was a teenager when Cosby assaulted her during a visit to the mansion. The jury concluded that Cosby was liable for sexual battery, siding with Huth’s account of the incident despite the passage of more than 50 years since it allegedly occurred. The damages awarded include compensation for emotional distress and punitive damages.

Cosby, now in his 80s, has consistently denied the allegations. His legal team argued that the claims were unsubstantiated and challenged the credibility of the plaintiff’s testimony. However, jurors ultimately found the evidence presented by Huth’s attorneys compelling enough to reach a verdict in her favor after deliberations.

The case was made possible under California’s legal provisions that temporarily lifted the statute of limitations for certain sexual abuse claims, allowing survivors to file lawsuits over incidents that occurred decades earlier. Legal experts say such measures have led to a wave of civil cases against high-profile figures in recent years.

Cosby’s legal troubles have significantly impacted his public image and career. Once known as “America’s Dad” for his role in The Cosby Show, his reputation has been overshadowed by multiple allegations of sexual misconduct. While he was previously convicted in a separate criminal case, that conviction was later overturned on appeal.

The verdict is expected to add to ongoing discussions around accountability and justice for survivors of sexual abuse, particularly in cases involving powerful public figures. It also underscores the role of civil courts in addressing historical allegations that may no longer be pursued through criminal prosecution.
