‘Game of Thrones’ Actor Michael Patrick Dies at 35 from Motor Neurone Disease

Actor Michael Patrick dies aged 35 from Motor Neurone Disease.

Michael Patrick, the actor known for his role in Game of Thrones and appearances in shows including Krypton, Blue Lights, and This Town, has died at the age of 35 after a battle with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). His wife, Naomi Sheehan, confirmed that he passed away on April 7, 2026, at the Northern Ireland Hospice, where he had been admitted roughly ten days earlier.

Motor Neurone Disease is a rare and serious neurological condition that progressively damages the nerves controlling voluntary muscles. As these nerves fail, the brain loses the ability to communicate with muscles, resulting in weakness and a gradual loss of movement. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is one of its most common forms. Symptoms often begin with difficulty gripping objects, tripping, or slurred speech, and can progress to impair the ability to speak, swallow, or breathe independently. There is currently no cure for the disease.

Patrick had been diagnosed with MND on February 1, 2023, and openly shared updates about his health. Sheehan announced his passing on Instagram, writing, “Words can't describe how broken-hearted we are,” and noted that he died peacefully, highlighting the courage and positivity he maintained throughout his illness. Even in his final public message, Patrick expressed hope and determination, saying he still had “lots planned” despite his condition.

A Belfast native, Patrick built a diverse career across television and theatre. He co-wrote the BBC series My Left Nut, inspired by his own life, and on stage, he earned acclaim for his lead performance in Shakespeare’s Richard III at the Lyric Theatre Belfast. His work was praised for its emotional depth and commanding presence.

Patrick’s death has prompted heartfelt tributes from colleagues and fans alike. Sheehan remembered him as full of life, joy, and laughter, concluding her tribute with a quote from Brendan Behan: “Eat. Drink. Love.” He is survived by his wife Naomi, his mother Pauline, siblings Kate, Maurice, and Hannah, and his nephew Micheál. Patrick’s legacy as an actor and writer, alongside his courage in facing a devastating illness, has left a lasting impact on both the stage and screen, as well as the hearts of those who knew him.
