Emilia Clarke Reveals Details About Her Game Of Thrones Earnings And Pay Structure

Emilia Clarke reveals details about her earnings from Game Of Thrones role.

Actress Emilia Clarke has addressed long-running speculation about her earnings from the hit HBO series Game of Thrones, clarifying that widely circulated figures about her per-episode salary were significantly exaggerated, though she declined to disclose the exact amount she was paid for her role as Daenerys Targaryen. Speaking in an interview with Variety, Clarke said reports suggesting that the main cast earned around $300,000 per episode were inaccurate.

Joking about the rumours, she remarked that such figures would have made her extremely wealthy, adding that she would have been able to afford luxury cars if those numbers were true. The actor, however, did not reveal her actual salary from the series, which ran for eight seasons and concluded in 2019. Over the years, various media reports have estimated that lead cast members earned anywhere between $300,000 and $500,000 per episode in the later seasons of the show, though official confirmations have remained limited.

Clarke’s portrayal of Daenerys Targaryen, one of the central characters in the fantasy epic, made her one of the most recognisable faces on television during the show’s global run. The series, based on George R.R. Martin’s novels, became a cultural phenomenon and helped redefine high-budget television storytelling. In earlier public comments, Clarke had stated that she was paid equally to her male co-stars, emphasising that there was no gender-based pay disparity during her time on the show.

She also noted that it was her first major acting job and that she did not experience financial discrimination during her tenure on the series. Beyond the financial discussions, Clarke has also spoken openly about serious health challenges she faced while filming Game of Thrones. She suffered two brain haemorrhages during the early seasons of the show, requiring emergency surgery and extended recovery periods, though she continued working afterward.

The actor later founded the charity SameYou to support recovery for people affected by brain injuries, using her personal experience to raise awareness about neurological trauma and rehabilitation. Following the end of Game of Thrones, Clarke has continued to work in film and television. She most recently appeared in the Peacock series Ponies, and is also set to star in upcoming projects including the Prime Video series Criminal and the horror film When Darkness Loves Us.
