"Did I Hear Correctly?" Stephen Graham stumped by Adolescence’s Surprising Popularity in India

The show's actor-writer says he anticipated strong reactions in the UK, but was blindsided by its soaring popularity in India.

When Stephen Graham co-wrote ‘Adolescence’, he never imagined it would become a global sensation—let alone a massive hit in India. The four-part Netflix series, which follows a 13-year-old boy accused of murder and the devastating impact on his life, has scored an astounding 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics hailing it as a masterpiece.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Graham expressed his shock at the show’s unexpected reach. While he anticipated strong reactions in the UK, he was blindsided by its soaring popularity in India.

“I got a text from a mate of mine, telling me how big Adolescence is in India," Graham recalled. “And my first response was, ‘Hold on… did you say India?! Did I hear you correctly?’ Apparently, it’s really striking a nerve there."

The actor-writer initially saw the show as deeply British in its themes and storytelling. “It was very colloquial. But it’s like we dropped a stone into this pond, and the ripple effect it’s produced has been unbelievable," he said.

Though many speculated the series was inspired by real-life events, Graham clarified that the idea came to him during a car ride after an awards show. “I swear on my late mother’s life—I had the entire show in my head. Like, the whole thing."

Graham was deeply moved by reports of teenage boys involved in violent crimes, leading him to explore the crisis affecting young men today. “These aren’t men committing these crimes. They’re boys,” he reflected.

“I just wanted to start a real conversation,” he added. “I didn’t know if people would be ready. But I think they are. And hopefully, this is just the beginning.”
