The 2018 smash-hit romcom ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ is getting a TV adaptation even as the much-anticipated movie sequel is still in limbo.

The 2018 smash-hit romcom ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ is getting a TV adaptation even as the much-anticipated movie sequel is still in limbo.

TV adaptation is officially in development at Max, with Adele Lim serving as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Lim, who co-wrote the 2018 hit film, will lead the project under her 100 Tigers banner, alongside original director Jon M. Chu and author Kevin Kwan. Warner Bros. TV is producing the series.

While details about the plot and cast remain under wraps, sources confirm the series will not replace the long-awaited sequel to the Crazy Rich Asians movie. The film sequel is still being developed by Warner Bros. Pictures and Chu, who is currently committed to directing Wicked and Wicked: For Good.

The TV adaptation will be based on Kwan’s bestselling book series, which includes Crazy Rich Asians, China Rich Girlfriend, Rich People Problems, and Lies and Weddings. Whether the original cast—featuring Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina, and others—will return is still unknown.

The Crazy Rich Asians film, released in 2018, became a global phenomenon, grossing $240 million at the box office. It followed Chinese-American professor Rachel Chu (Wu) as she discovered that her fiancé Nick Young (Golding) came from one of Singapore’s wealthiest families. The ensemble cast also included Gemma Chan, Michelle Yeoh, Nico Santos, Ronny Chieng, Jimmy O. Yang, Ken Jeong, Awkwafina, and Lisa Lu, among others.

With the TV adaptation moving forward, fans can look forward to a fresh take on the Crazy Rich Asians universe, though the fate of the long-delayed sequel remains uncertain.
