Christopher Nolan’s 'The Odyssey' IMAX Tickets Trigger Outrage Over ₹3,300 Pricing Surge

Christopher Nolan IMAX ticket pricing triggers strong fan backlash.

Advance bookings for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey have triggered widespread discussion after IMAX ticket prices in India were revealed to be among the highest ever for a theatrical release. The film, which is still weeks away from its global premiere on July 17, has already generated significant buzz due to both its star-studded cast and unusually high ticket pricing.

The film features an ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Zendaya, Tom Holland and Robert Pattinson in key roles, and has been positioned as one of the most anticipated international releases of the year. However, excitement surrounding the film quickly turned into surprise for many moviegoers when advance bookings opened on June 8 across major Indian cities.

In cities such as Mumbai and Pune, premium IMAX seats were reportedly priced as high as ₹3,000 per ticket, placing the film among the most expensive theatrical experiences currently available in the country. The pricing has drawn strong reactions from audiences online, with many questioning the steep cost of watching a single film in premium formats. Pune, in particular, emerged as the focal point of the debate after ticket listings at cinemas such as Cinepolis Aundh and Inox Megaplex showed evening show prices ranging between ₹1,600 and ₹3,000.

Even morning shows were priced between ₹1,400 and ₹2,600, further intensifying reactions on social media platforms. Despite the backlash over pricing, demand appears to remain strong, with several IMAX screenings reportedly filling up quickly after bookings opened. Social media users expressed a mix of frustration and curiosity, with some joking about the premium pricing model. One user commented that major theatre chains had effectively turned Pune into “Monaco” with the elevated ticket rates.

Industry observers note that the combination of a high-profile director, an ensemble cast and the IMAX format often drives premium pricing strategies for blockbuster releases. Nevertheless, the response to The Odyssey highlights growing sensitivity among audiences regarding cinema pricing, even as anticipation for the film continues to build ahead of its release.
