Cate Blanchett’s Cryptic ‘Squid Game 3’ Cameo: “Most Mysterious Job” Ever!
Cate Blanchett makes secretive cameo in Squid Game 3, calls it her “most mysterious” role.
Academy Award-winning actress Cate Blanchett has described her unexpected cameo in the final moments of Netflix’s Squid Game 3 as “one of the most mysterious jobs” of her career. In an interview with Variety, Blanchett revealed that the role, filmed in Los Angeles, came with minimal context, requiring her to quickly master the Korean game of ddakji for the scene. The globally acclaimed South Korean series, known for shattering viewership records, featured Blanchett as an American recruiter playing ddakji with a homeless man in a back alley, briefly interacting with the character Front Man, played by Lee Byung-hun.
Blanchett, known for her versatility in films like Blue Jasmine and The Aviator, described the experience as highly secretive, with information provided on a “need-to-know basis.” She received only a few storyboards and script sides, practicing extensively to perfect the game for the shoot. “I knew what they needed from every shot, and then I was given the sides,” she told Variety, emphasizing the enigmatic nature of the production. The cameo, part of the series’ third season, underscores its global appeal, with Blanchett noting, “There’s not a corner of the globe that it hasn’t touched in some way.”
When asked about starring in a potential American remake of Squid Game, reportedly in development under director David Fincher, Blanchett expressed enthusiasm. “I am wildly open to anything,” she said, praising the series’ world-building. While she claimed to know little about the project—“I’m not being coy. I really don’t”—she expressed eagerness to reunite with Fincher, with whom she collaborated on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Fincher, known for Netflix projects like House of Cards and Mindhunter, is rumored to helm the remake, adding to the anticipation.

Her brief but impactful appearance in Squid Game 3 further cements her versatility and willingness to embrace unconventional roles in global storytelling.
