Grammy-nominated R&B singer Angie Stone, renowned for hits like “Wish I Didn’t Miss You” and her pioneering role in the all-female hip-hop trio The Sequence, was killed in a car accident early Saturday. She was 63. The crash occurred around 4 a.m. on Interstate 65, south of Montgomery, as Stone traveled back to Atlanta from Alabama in a 2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van. According to the Alabama Highway Patrol, the van flipped and was struck by a Freightliner truck. Stone was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver and seven passengers survived and were treated at Baptist Medical Center.
Stone’s manager, Walter Millsap III, confirmed the devastating news, calling it an “unexpected tragedy.” Her children, Diamond and Michael Archer, expressed their heartbreak, saying, “We are completely devastated and still processing this loss.” Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Stone rose to fame with The Sequence on Sugar Hill Records, co-creating the influential track “Funk You Up.” Her solo career soared in the neo-soul era of the 2000s with chart-toppers like “No More Rain (In This Cloud)” and albums such as Mahogany Soul and The Art of Love & War.
A Soul Train Lady of Soul winner, Stone also ventured into acting, appearing in films like The Fighting Temptations and on Broadway in Chicago. She was set to perform at the CIAA men’s basketball championship halftime show Saturday, where a moment of silence honored her legacy. The cause of the crash remains under investigation as the music world mourns a trailblazing talent.
