“Mean and Unfunny... There Must Be a Cleverer, Less Cheap Way!" Aimee Lou Wood Slams ‘SNL’ Skit

‘The White Lotus’ star Aimee Lou Wood has called out ‘Saturday Night Live’ for its recent parody of her, labelling the sketch “mean and unfunny.” The April 12 episode featured SNL cast member Sarah Sherman impersonating Wood’s character Chelsea from the HBO series 'The White Lotus', complete with exaggerated prosthetic teeth and a caricatured accent.

Wood, also known for her role in Netflix’s ‘Sex Education’, took to Instagram to express her disappointment. “Whilst in honest mood – I did find the ‘SNL’ thing mean and unfunny xo,” she wrote, adding that the show had since reached out with an apology.

Though Wood says she generally enjoys being the butt of a joke when it’s done well, she felt the sketch crossed a line. “I am not thin skinned. I actually love being taken the p*** out off when it’s clever and in good spirits. But the joke was about fluoride. I have big gap teeth, not bad teeth,” she said. “I don’t mind caricature, I understand that’s what ‘SNL’ is.”

However, she felt the humour was one-sided and poorly aimed. “The rest of the skit was punching up and I/Chelsea was the only one punched down on... Yes, take the piss for sure – that’s what the show is about – but there must be a cleverer, more nuanced, less cheap way?”

Wood also criticised the inaccuracy of Sherman’s portrayal, particularly the British accent. “At least get the accent right seriously, I respect accuracy even if it’s mean,” she added.

The comments have sparked conversation online about the limits of satire and the ethics of impersonation in comedy.
