Yash Johar Tears Rs 3 Crore Budget Paper After 'Bole Chudiyan' Set Costs Skyrocket

Yash Johar tears Rs 3 crore budget paper after Bole Chudiyan set exceeds cost.

Karan Johar’s 2001 blockbuster Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham remains one of Bollywood’s most lavish family dramas, remembered for its grandeur and iconic music. However, behind the scenes, the scale of the film—particularly its song “Bole Chudiyan”—created moments of panic for the makers. Assistant director Nikkhil Advani recently recalled the chaos during the shoot and a defining reaction from producer Yash Johar.

Speaking to Radio Nasha, Advani revealed that when the film was first narrated to Yash Johar, the entire art budget was set at Rs 3 crore. Yash Johar approved the estimate and gave the green light for production. However, the very first set designed for “Bole Chudiyan” ended up exceeding that amount, setting the stage for a dramatic moment on set.

Advani described the shoot as complete mayhem, with over 200 dancers, 300 junior artistes, and massive custom-made sets. Chandeliers were specially manufactured to meet Karan Johar’s vision of opulence. Amid the chaos, Karan Johar reportedly fainted, while Kajol struggled with her heavy lehenga, adding to the tension of the day.

That evening, Yash Johar called the team for a tea break and calmly asked about the film’s budget. Upon being reminded of the Rs 3 crore art allocation, he pointed out that the “Bole Chudiyan” set alone had already crossed that figure. In a surprising gesture, he tore up the budget paper and told the team to focus on making the film without worrying about the numbers.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham went on to become a massive success, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor Khan, with a special appearance by Rani Mukerji. The film won five Filmfare Awards, including Best Actress for Kajol, cementing its place as one of Bollywood’s most iconic and extravagant productions.
