Varun Dhawan Opens Up About Daughter Lara's Painful Battle With Hip Dysplasia
Varun Dhawan shares daughter Lara's hip dysplasia diagnosis and difficult recovery journey.
Actor Varun Dhawan recently opened up about a challenging phase in his personal life, revealing that his daughter Lara was diagnosed with Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH), a condition that can affect a child’s ability to walk and move normally. Varun and his wife Natasha Dalal welcomed their daughter on June 3, 2024, and the actor shared details of her health journey during a candid conversation.
Speaking on the show Be A Man, Yaar!, Varun revealed that the diagnosis was made when Lara was around one-and-a-half years old. He explained that DDH occurs when the hip joint slips out of its socket, which can lead to uneven leg length and difficulty in walking or running. The actor described how the condition can also result in long-term complications such as early arthritis if not treated properly.
Varun elaborated on the medical challenges involved, noting that treatment for DDH is more advanced and often detected earlier in some Western countries. However, he also acknowledged that India has capable medical professionals who provide effective care. In Lara’s case, the condition was addressed through a medical procedure that helped reposition the hip joint without requiring major surgery.

The actor further shared that his daughter had to be placed in a spica cast for nearly two and a half months following the procedure, a phase he described as extremely difficult for both the child and the family. He recalled the emotional experience of seeing his daughter undergo anaesthesia and wake up in a cast, highlighting the resilience required during the recovery process.
Now that the cast has been removed, Varun confirmed that Lara is in the recovery stage and doing better. Reflecting on the journey, he expressed a desire to document the experience in the future, possibly through a book, to raise awareness about the condition and share insights with other parents facing similar situations.
Varun and Natasha, who married in January 2021 after a long-term relationship, have largely kept their personal life private. By sharing this experience, the actor has brought attention to a relatively lesser-known medical condition, while also highlighting the importance of early diagnosis and treatment in ensuring better outcomes for children.
