Usha Uthup Rejects Claim Of Celebrating Mamata Banerjee’s Election Defeat

Usha Uthup denies viral claim of election celebration remark.

Veteran Singer Usha Uthup has strongly rejected viral social media claims suggesting that she recently performed her iconic song Didi to celebrate the reported defeat of the Trinamool Congress in the West Bengal Assembly elections. The singer clarified that the video circulating online is not recent and has been misrepresented with a false political narrative.

The controversy began after a social media thread widely circulated across platforms such as X and WhatsApp, claiming that Usha Uthup had sung her 25-year-old track Didi, originally inspired by Algerian singer Khaled’s famous composition of the same name, following the alleged electoral setback of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s party. The post quickly gained traction and sparked confusion among users, with some posts attempting to link the performance to political developments in the state.

The viral claims went further, alleging that Usha Uthup had relocated from Kolkata to Mumbai during the tenure of the Trinamool Congress government. Some posts also made unverified and serious accusations suggesting that “cut money” was demanded from her by individuals associated with the former state administration, prompting her to leave the city. These assertions, however, were not backed by any evidence.

Responding firmly to the controversy, Usha Uthup dismissed all allegations as baseless. She clarified that the video being shared is old and unrelated to any recent political events. The singer emphasised that she has been performing Didi for more than 25 years and that its circulation in the current context is misleading and misleadingly framed to suggest a political intent that does not exist.

Uthup also categorically denied claims that she had shifted her residence from Kolkata to Mumbai. In a statement shared on Instagram, she wrote that she has never left Kolkata and continues to reside there. She urged the public and social media users not to drag her into unnecessary controversies or attribute political meanings to her musical performances. She further reiterated that her artistic work should not be politicised or misinterpreted.

In her message, she addressed fans and music lovers directly, stating: “Dear friends and music lovers... There has been a post on Twitter and WhatsApp that has been going around, to which I just want to say: Please do not unnecessarily embroil me in controversies that I have nothing to do with.” She added two key clarifications: that she has been singing the song for over 25 years and that she has always remained based in Kolkata.

The incident highlights the growing issue of misinformation and context manipulation on social media platforms, where older videos are often recirculated with altered claims to fit unrelated narratives. In this case, a long-standing musical performance was incorrectly linked to a political event, prompting the veteran artist to publicly clarify her position and reaffirm her long-standing connection to Kolkata and her career in music.
