Tabu Calls Out Daily Ageism Faced By Women In Film Industry

Tabu condemns ageism in cinema, highlighting daily bias faced by women.

Actor Tabu has spoken out against ageism faced by women in the film industry, calling it a persistent issue that women experience “every single day” regardless of their work, reputation, or career stage. The 54-year-old actor made the remarks in a recent interview, where she reflected on how conversations in cinema often shift focus from performance to age.

Tabu said there is a constant tendency to scrutinise a woman’s age rather than her professional output. She pointed out that such discussions are often imposed externally, noting that people tend to focus more on how old an actor is than the work they are actively doing. She described this as a recurring pattern that follows women throughout their careers in the entertainment industry.

The actor added that these attitudes are not isolated incidents but part of a broader, ongoing culture within the industry. She remarked that individuals questioning women about age seem more concerned with it than the women themselves, and criticised the expectation that age should be treated as a limiting factor in career choices or public perception.

Tabu also reflected on early experiences in her career, revealing that she was often advised not to directly express her reasons for rejecting film offers. Instead, she said she was encouraged to cite logistical issues such as scheduling conflicts rather than openly stating her opinion on scripts. However, she asserted that she chose to be honest when she did not like a project, despite industry norms at the time.

On the professional front, Tabu was recently seen in Priyadarshan’s film Bhooth Bangla, where she starred alongside Akshay Kumar and Wamiqa Gabbi. She is currently working on King 100, the milestone 100th film of actor Nagarjuna Akkineni, marking a reunion between the two after several decades since their earlier collaborations.
