Ramayana Compared With Adipurush: How Ranbir-Yash Film Avoids Past Mythological Mistakes

The release of the trailer of Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana has reignited comparisons with Om Raut’s Adipurush, with audiences and film enthusiasts examining how the two mythological epics approach the same ancient story differently. While both films draw inspiration from the revered Ramayana, their visual styles, character portrayals, music and storytelling approaches appear to take contrasting paths. The comparison was expected after the trailer of Ramayana, featuring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram and Yash as Ravana, was unveiled.

The footage has generated widespread discussion, particularly around its grand scale, visual presentation and the way key characters from the epic have been represented on screen. Released in 2023, Adipurush, starring Prabhas, Kriti Sanon and Saif Ali Khan, attempted to bring the ancient epic to a modern cinematic audience. However, the film faced significant criticism after its release, with viewers raising concerns over visual effects, character designs, dialogues and creative choices.

One of the biggest areas of debate around Adipurush was its portrayal of central figures from the Ramayana. The trailer also introduces several important characters, including Sai Pallavi as Sita, Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi, Rakul Preet Singh as Shurpanakha and other key figures from the Ramayana. The casting choices have added to anticipation around the film’s attempt to balance mythology with modern filmmaking techniques.

While direct comparisons between the two films are inevitable due to their shared source material, the filmmakers behind Ramayana appear to be addressing several concerns that affected the reception of Adipurush. A stronger focus on character depth, visual authenticity and emotional storytelling seems to be central to Tiwari’s adaptation. Ultimately, both films represent different interpretations of one of India’s most significant epics. The success of Ramayana will depend not only on its visual spectacle but also on how effectively it captures the emotional, cultural and spiritual dimensions of the timeless story.
