PM Modi Pays Tribute to Veteran Actor-Comedian Asrani, Celebrating His Iconic Roles And Legacy

PM Modi mourns veteran actor Asrani, praising his six-decade career and iconic comic performances in Hindi cinema.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound grief over the demise of veteran actor-comedian Govardhan Asrani, hailing him as a "gifted entertainer and a truly versatile artist" who brought joy to generations through his iconic performances. Asrani, renowned for his memorable roles in classics like Sholay, Chupke Chupke, and Dhamaal, passed away on October 20, 2025, at the age of 84 after a prolonged battle with age-related ailments. He had been hospitalised for five days prior to his death, marking the end of an illustrious career spanning over six decades and more than 300 films. Modi's tribute, shared via an X post, underscores the actor's enduring legacy in Indian cinema, where his blend of humour and pathos resonated deeply with audiences across eras.

In his heartfelt message, Modi wrote, "Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Govardhan Asrani Ji. A gifted entertainer and a truly versatile artist, he entertained audiences across generations. He particularly added joy and laughter to countless lives through his unforgettable performances. His contribution to Indian cinema will always be cherished. My condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti." The Prime Minister's words echo the sentiments of countless fans and peers, highlighting Asrani's ability to infuse everyday characters with wit and warmth. Tributes have poured in from Bollywood luminaries, including Akshay Kumar, Anupam Kher, and filmmaker Ramesh Sippy, reflecting the actor's widespread admiration. Asrani's passing comes amid a wave of nostalgia for the golden age of Hindi cinema, where his comic timing and expressive flair defined an entire genre.

Asrani made his Hindi film debut in 1967 with Hare Kaanch Ki Choodiyan, portraying the friend of lead actor Biswajeet, and simultaneously shone as a lead in several Gujarati films. A graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), he seamlessly transitioned between dramatic roles in films like Anamika, Mere Apne, Abhimaan, and Bawarchi, and comedic gems such as Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Dhamaal. His most enduring portrayal remains the quirky jailer in the 1975 blockbuster Sholay, directed by Ramesh Sippy, whose catchphrase "Hum Angrezon ke zamane ke jailer hain ha ha" has become a cultural staple, endlessly quoted and mimicked by cinephiles. This versatility not only earned him a National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor but also cemented his status as a bridge between art-house and mainstream cinema, influencing generations of performers.

While Bollywood mourns, Modi's tribute reminds us of Asrani's timeless gift: turning ordinary moments into laughter-filled memories. As the industry reflects on his void, his films continue to light up screens, ensuring his "joy and laughter" endure. Om Shanti.
