Malayalam cinema legend Mohanlal has been honored with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest cinematic accolade, prompting an outpouring of congratulations from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, political leaders, film industry stalwarts, and fans across the nation. The 65-year-old actor, director, and producer, recognized for his unparalleled contributions to Indian cinema, expressed deep gratitude, dedicating the award to his family, colleagues, and audience.
“Truly humbled to receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. This honour is not mine alone; it belongs to every person who has walked alongside me on this journey,” Mohanlal wrote on social media. “Your love, faith, and encouragement have been my greatest strength. I carry this recognition with deep gratitude and a full heart.” He will receive the award at the 71st National Film Awards ceremony on September 23.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced Mohanlal’s selection following the recommendation of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award Selection Committee, citing his “remarkable cinematic journey, unmatched talent, versatility, and relentless hard work” that have set a “golden standard in Indian film history.” With a career spanning over four decades and more than 350 films across Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Kannada cinema, Mohanlal’s influence is undeniable.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the tributes, hailing Mohanlal as “a leading light of Malayalam cinema who epitomises excellence and versatility.” In a post on X, Modi noted, “His cinematic and theatrical brilliance across mediums is truly inspiring. May his accomplishments continue to inspire generations to come.” Mohanlal responded, expressing gratitude to the Prime Minister: “My heartfelt gratitude to Hon’ble PM Modi Ji for your kind words and blessings; they fill me with encouragement and joy.”
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan called the award “truly deserving,” stating, “This proud moment brings joy to every Malayali and to our nation as a whole.” Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan described Mohanlal as the “pride of Malayalam,” praising his “natural and unique acting style” that has captivated audiences for over four decades.
The film fraternity also joined in celebrating Mohanlal’s achievement. Veteran actor Mammootty, a longtime colleague, wrote on Facebook, “More than a colleague, a brother, and an artist who has lived and breathed cinema. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is a crown you truly deserve.” Actress Manju Warrier shared, “Thank you for inspiring generations! Our very own.” Directors Fasil and Kamal, along with actress Urvashi, echoed similar sentiments, with Urvashi noting, “It is a recognition for Malayalam cinema.”
In a statement to a TV channel, Mohanlal expressed his joy: “I just came to know about it... I am so happy. I thank the Government of India and the jury for selecting me for this honour. It’s a recognition for Malayalam cinema, and I share this with everyone who loves me.”
