Actor Mrunal Thakur issued a public apology to Bipasha Basu following backlash over a resurfaced interview clip where she made comments about Basu’s appearance. The 33-year-old, recently seen in Son of Sardaar 2, addressed the controversy on her Instagram story on Thursday, expressing remorse for her words spoken as a 19-year-old during a playful exchange.
In the old interview, Thakur, alongside her Kumkum Bhagya co-star Arjit Taneja, engaged in light-hearted banter. When Taneja teased her about performing a headstand and push-ups, Thakur jokingly remarked, “Do you want to marry a girl who is manly with muscles? Go marry Bipasha... I am far better than Bipasha, okay.” The clip, which recently went viral on social media, prompted criticism for body-shaming.
Reflecting on the incident, Thakur wrote, “19-year-old me as a teenager said many silly things. I didn’t always understand the weight of my voice or how much words, even in jest, could hurt. My intent was never to body-shame anyone.” She acknowledged the insensitivity of her remarks, adding, “I truly wish I had chosen my words differently... With time, I have grown to appreciate that beauty comes in every form.”

In response to the controversy, Basu posted a cryptic message on Instagram, stating, “Strong women lift each other up. Get those muscles, beautiful ladies... muscles help you attain good physical and mental health forever!” The post emphasized empowerment and challenged outdated notions about women’s strength.
Thakur’s apology underscores her commitment to personal growth and sensitivity, while Basu’s response highlights her advocacy for strength and positivity. Thakur’s latest film, Son of Sardaar 2, released on August 1, continues to run in theaters, while Basu last appeared in the 2020 series Dangerous alongside her husband, Karan Singh Grover.
