Mohan Kapur Reacts To Success And Hype Around Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar

Mohan Kapur questioned the massive popularity surrounding Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar film.

Actor Mohan Kapur has spoken candidly about the massive popularity of Dhurandhar, saying he does not fully understand the level of hype surrounding the Ranveer Singh-led spy thriller franchise despite acknowledging its cinematic strengths. His remarks come at a time when the film series continues to dominate the box office and public conversation across India.

Directed by Aditya Dhar, the Dhurandhar franchise has emerged as one of the biggest commercial successes in recent Hindi cinema, even while drawing sharply divided reactions from critics. During a recent conversation on a YouTube show hosted by Siddharth Kannan, Mohan Kapur reflected on his personal viewing experience and admitted that he initially struggled to understand why audiences were reacting so enthusiastically to the film.

According to Kapur, he watched the film alone in a theatre shortly before the release of the second instalment and left feeling unconvinced by the overwhelming praise it had received. At the same time, he clarified that he considers Dhurandhar to be a “phenomenal film” with highly intelligent storytelling and clever writing, which he believes explains why the franchise has generated both admiration and criticism.

Kapur also addressed the debate around the film’s connection to real-world events. He said the franchise uses real incidents as inspiration but ultimately presents a fictional narrative rather than a factual account. Referring to the appearance of R. Madhavan in the film, Kapur argued that viewers can immediately recognise that certain implied historical or political elements are fictionalised for dramatic effect.

The actor’s comments have triggered fresh discussions online about the line between cinematic fiction and realism in politically themed thrillers. While many fans defended the franchise and praised its scale, performances and screenplay, others agreed with Kapur’s view that audience excitement around the film may have grown beyond the film’s actual narrative depth.

Despite the mixed critical response, Dhurandhar continues to perform strongly at the box office and remains one of the most talked-about Hindi film franchises of the year. The debate sparked by Mohan Kapur’s remarks also reflects broader conversations in the film industry about audience perception, storytelling techniques and the growing influence of hype culture in determining cinematic success.
