Karan Johar Defends Alia Bhatt’s Alpha Amid Trolling, Says ‘Please Relax’ To Critics

Johar defends Alia Bhatt amid Alpha trolling.

Karan Johar has come out in strong support of Alpha and its lead star Alia Bhatt amid online criticism of the film. Sharing his views on Instagram Stories, Johar praised the spy thriller's box office opening and defended Bhatt's performance, arguing that audience response in theatres carried greater weight than negativity on social media.

Alpha, part of the expanding YRF Spy Universe, features Alia Bhatt and Sharvari in the lead roles and was released in theatres on July 3. Since its release, the film has received mixed reviews from critics and audiences. While several viewers have praised its action sequences, scale and performances, others have criticised aspects of its screenplay and storytelling, triggering widespread debate online.

Reacting to the discussions surrounding the film, Johar described Alpha as a positive sign for theatres at a time when attracting audiences remains a challenge. In his Instagram post, he wrote, "When footfalls are a challenge ALPHA takes a solid start! It emphasises many things…the audience is way above online negativity and they are the true warriors…" He suggested that the film's theatrical performance demonstrated that cinema-goers continue to make independent choices regardless of online discourse.

The filmmaker also reserved special praise for Alia Bhatt, highlighting what he described as her enduring star power and acting ability. Johar said the actor's "stardom and theatrical pull" as well as her "unquestionable talent" were evident in the film. He added, "The stardom and theatrical pull and unquestionable talent of Alia Bhatt and the impact of a big screen spectacle is undebatable and that YRF has a continued franchise and an endeavour to create theatrical tentpole experiences that need our applause and not any toxicity!"

Johar further urged people to avoid excessive negativity directed at the film and those associated with it. In another part of his message, he appealed for a more balanced perspective, stressing that differing opinions about a film are natural but personal attacks and sustained online trolling are unnecessary. His remarks were widely interpreted as a defence of both Alia Bhatt and the filmmakers against criticism circulating on social media.

Alpha is one of the latest additions to the YRF Spy Universe, a franchise that includes several successful action films built around interconnected characters and storylines. The film marks Alia Bhatt's entry into the spy universe while also giving Sharvari a major action-oriented role. With the film continuing its theatrical run, its commercial performance and audience reception are expected to remain under close watch, while Johar's endorsement has added another dimension to the ongoing conversation surrounding the film.
