Aamir Khan Reveals Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra Advised Against 'Lagaan' Production

Aamir Khan defied industry peers' warnings to make Lagaan a timeless classic.

As the iconic Hindi film Lagaan prepares to complete 25 years since its release on June 15, actor and producer Aamir Khan has recalled the skepticism the project faced before it went into production. The Oscar-nominated film, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, was considered a risky venture at a time when mainstream Bollywood largely focused on glamorous settings, contemporary stories, and conventional filmmaking practices. Despite concerns from industry colleagues, the film went on to become one of the most celebrated productions in Indian cinema.

In an interview with PTI, Aamir revealed that filmmakers Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra had advised him against certain production decisions shortly before shooting began. According to the actor, both believed that filming the entire movie in a single schedule could create logistical difficulties and potentially derail the project. However, Aamir chose to proceed with the plan, trusting the vision he shared with Gowariker and remaining committed to the unconventional approach.

The actor described the decision to produce and star in Lagaan as a turning point in his career. At the time, the film broke several established norms of commercial Hindi Cinema. Set during the British colonial era, the story featured rural characters speaking in the Awadhi dialect, relied heavily on sync-sound recording, and revolved around a cricket match. These elements stood in sharp contrast to the popular trends of the late 1990s and early 2000s, making the project appear commercially risky.

Aamir also admitted that he initially had reservations about the film when Gowariker first narrated the script. Although he appreciated the story, he felt it was too complex and unconventional for mainstream audiences. For several years, Gowariker reportedly approached different producers and actors with the screenplay while continuing to refine the project. The script circulated within the industry before eventually finding support from Aamir, who decided not only to act in the film but also to back it as a producer.

Released in 2001, Lagaan achieved both critical and commercial success. The film earned an Academy Award nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category and won multiple National Film Awards. It also emerged as one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of the year, earning widespread acclaim for its storytelling, music, performances, and technical execution. The film's success established it as a landmark achievement in Indian cinema and demonstrated the viability of large-scale experimental storytelling.

Reflecting on the production, Aamir said he was pleased that he chose Lagaan as his first venture as a producer. The project allowed him to introduce newer filmmaking practices and take creative risks that were uncommon in the industry at the time. Twenty-five years later, the film continues to be remembered as a defining work in Indian cinema, with its influence still visible in the way ambitious and unconventional stories are developed and produced for mainstream audiences.
