Kangana Ranaut Recalls Post-Fashion Struggle as She Completes 20 Years in Bollywood
Kangana Ranaut recalls the post-Fashion struggle and credits ordinary roles for the breakthrough.
Actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has reflected on the challenges she faced in the early years of her film career, revealing that the success of Fashion did not bring the opportunities she had expected. Speaking as she completed 20 years in the film industry, Ranaut said there was a period when she struggled to find meaningful work despite earning critical acclaim for her performances. She described the phase as one of introspection, during which she questioned why greater success was not translating into better career prospects.
Ranaut began her Bollywood journey with the 2006 hit Gangster: A Love Story and quickly gained recognition through films such as Woh Lamhe, Life in a... Metro, and Fashion. However, she said that even after the success of Fashion, she found herself struggling professionally. Looking back, the actor said she used that period to evaluate her career choices and understand the reasons behind the lack of opportunities, viewing the challenges as lessons rather than setbacks.
According to Ranaut, advice from industry insiders led her to hire a manager associated with some of the biggest stars in the business. The move eventually steered her toward commercial entertainers such as Rascals and Double Dhamaal. While she accepted those roles to remain active in the industry, she admitted feeling that she was working below her potential at the time. Ranaut said survival often requires making practical choices rather than pursuing ideal career paths.

The actor said her breakthrough came when she embraced characters that reflected ordinary women rather than glamorous stereotypes. Films such as Queen and Tanu Weds Manu Returns helped redefine her image and established her as one of Bollywood's leading performers. Ranaut explained that when she entered the industry, many actresses were former beauty queens, supermodels, or international performers, whereas her own strengths lay in portraying relatable and grounded characters.
Ranaut also spoke about her approach to acting, describing spontaneity as one of her defining traits. She said she prefers to rely on instinct and natural performances rather than spending excessive time perfecting scenes through numerous takes. According to the actor, imperfections can often add authenticity to a performance, making characters feel more real and relatable to audiences.
The actress is now preparing for the release of her upcoming film Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata, in which she portrays a hospital nurse during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. The film focuses on the courage and dedication of nurses and ward staff who played critical roles during the crisis. Produced by PEN Studios, Manikarnika Films, and Paramhans Creations, the film features an ensemble cast and is scheduled for a theatrical release on June 12. Ranaut said the project resonated with her because it highlights ordinary individuals whose commitment to duty makes them true heroes in extraordinary circumstances.
