Varun Dhawan Says 'Andhadhun' Was Originally Planned With Him and Kangana Ranaut
Varun Dhawan reveals he was originally offered Andhadhun role.
Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan has revealed that the critically acclaimed thriller Andhadhun was originally planned with him in the lead role, and that actress Kangana Ranaut was also being considered for the film’s cast during its early development stage. The actor shared this detail during a recent appearance on comedian Tanmay Bhatt’s YouTube show, where he reflected on projects he had turned down or could not commit to.
According to Varun, he was approached for the film but had to opt out due to prior work commitments. He said the opportunity came at a time when he was already filming another project, which prevented him from taking on the role. The actor admitted that Andhadhun stood out as one of the notable films he regretted missing, given its eventual critical and commercial success.
He further revealed that the original casting plan for the film reportedly included him and Kangana in the lead roles. While he did not elaborate on how far the casting discussions progressed, his comments suggest that the film underwent significant changes before final production decisions were made. Ultimately, the role went to Ayushmann Khurrana, who delivered a widely acclaimed performance.

Andhadhun, directed by Sriram Raghavan, was released in 2018 and went on to become one of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated thrillers. The film follows the story of a pianist who pretends to be visually impaired, only to become entangled in a complex murder mystery. Its sharp screenplay, dark humour, and unexpected narrative twists earned widespread praise from critics and audiences alike.
The film also featured strong performances from Tabu and Radhika Apte, further contributing to its success. Ayushmann Khurrana’s portrayal of the lead character was particularly lauded, earning him the National Film Award for Best Actor. Over time, Andhadhun has gained a reputation as a standout example of modern Indian thriller filmmaking.
On the professional front, Varun was recently seen in Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, alongside Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde. The actor continues to work across commercial cinema projects while occasionally reflecting on career choices and missed opportunities from earlier in his journey.
