Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ Dominates Nominations at 7th SWA Awards

Imtiaz Ali’s film ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ leads nominations at the 7th Screenwriters Association Awards.

Imtiaz Ali’s critically acclaimed film “Amar Singh Chamkila” has emerged as a frontrunner for the 7th Screenwriters Association (SWA) Awards, securing nominations in major categories including Best Story, Screenplay, Dialogues, and Lyrics. The awards, set to take place on August 9, 2025, will celebrate exceptional storytelling in films, series, and TV shows from 2024.

The musical drama, starring Diljit Dosanjh as the titular Punjabi folk legend and Parineeti Chopra as his love interest, has been lauded for its narrative depth and lyrical brilliance, with lyricist Irshad Kamil earning nominations for five tracks: “Baaja,” “Bol Mohabbat,” “Ishq Mitaye,” “Naram Kaalja,” and “Vida Karo.”

In the Best Story and Screenplay categories, “Amar Singh Chamkila” competes with Atul Sabharwal’s “Berlin,” Avinash Sampath’s “CTRL,” Karan Gour’s “Fairy Folk,” and Kunal Kemmu’s “Madgaon Express.”

The Best Dialogue category features Sumukhi Suresh for “CTRL,” Gour for “Fairy Folk,” Devang Tiwari and Amit Pradhan for “Jo Tera Hai Woh Mera Hai,” Niren Bhatt for “Stree 2,” and Kemmu for “Madgaon Express.”

The Best Debut category highlights Shuchi Talati’s “Girls Will Be Girls,” produced by Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal, alongside Biplab Goswami and Sneha Desai for “Laapataa Ladies” and Bodhayan Roychaudhury for “Sector 36.”

“Girls Will Be Girls” also earned nominations for Anvitaa Dutt’s title track in “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and Shashwat Sachdev’s “Pehli Sharam” in the Best Lyrics TV/Web category.

In the OTT space, “Freedom at Midnight,” “Gyaarah Gyaarah,” “Lootere,” “Maharani 3,” and “IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack” are nominated for Best Screenplay and Dialogue in the web-drama category, while fan favorites “Panchayat 3” and “Gullak 4” secured nominations for Best Story, Screenplay, and Dialogue.

Other web-comedy/musical nominees include “Bandish Bandits 2,” “Cubicles 4,” and “Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper,” with “Raat Jawaan Hai” and “Mamla Legal Hai” also recognized for screenplay and dialogue.

In the Best Lyrics TV/Web category, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and A M Turaz are nominated for “Saiyaan Hatto Jaao” from “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar,” alongside Akhil for “Zaroori Toh Nahi” from “Citadel: Honey Bunny,” and Juno for “Asman Rootha” and “Feeling Nayi Hai” from “Panchayat 3” and “Gullak 4,” respectively. Sagar’s “Tu Hai Toh” from “Mr. & Mrs. Mahi” also earned a Best Lyrics nomination.

On television, “Anupamaa,” starring Rupali Ganguly, and “Bas Itna Sa Khwaab” have secured nominations for Best Story and Dialogue, underscoring their narrative impact.

The 7th SWA Awards promise to celebrate the creative excellence of India’s screenwriters, with “Amar Singh Chamkila” poised to shine as a standout contender.
