‘Bill Burr of India’ Kaviraj Singh Sparks Outrage Over Sexist Jokes, Fans Rally to Defend Him

Stand-up comedian Kaviraj Singh, often hailed as the ‘Bill Burr of India,’ has ignited a firestorm of controversy over sexist remarks in his recent performances, prompting widespread backlash while his loyal fanbase and fellow comedians stand firmly in his corner. The uproar began when content creator Aman Pandey called out Singh on Instagram, sharing a clip where the comedian derogatorily likened social media influencers to sex workers, using the offensive Hindi term ‘r***i’ as a punchline.
The criticism escalated as netizens unearthed older videos, including one where Singh compared women to buffalo and mocked feminism, claiming women are “born with a food-making machine” to nurture. Critics, including actor Swara Bhasker and several female comedians, condemned the remarks as regressive and thinly veiled as dark humor. Bhasker, in an Instagram story, labeled the content “vile” and criticized its normalization of misogyny.
Singh, a former content lead for The Viral Fever, Great Indian Laughter Challenge, and Being Indian, now heads Pocket Change, a socially conscious YouTube channel. His YouTube special Are Women Becoming Men?, with 2.7 million views, has fueled both praise and ire. Despite the backlash, with some calling for his cancellation, Singh’s supporters, including comedians like Nishant Suri, defend his work as free speech, arguing his observational satire sparks meaningful debate. Fans have reportedly spent thousands to secure tickets to his shows, undeterred by the controversy. Singh has remained silent, disabling comments on his Instagram posts.
