Hema Malini Clarifies Claims About Highest Earnings as A Female Actor
Hema Malini addresses claims about past actor salaries.
Veteran actor Hema Malini has dismissed the widely held perception that she was among the highest-paid female actors of her era, saying that actors in her time did not receive the kind of large fees that are common in the film industry today. During a recent podcast, the actor recalled her early career and said that financial gain was never her primary motivation for accepting films. She added that her focus remained on her work and the opportunities she received rather than negotiating for higher payments.
Responding to the claim that she was one of the highest-paid actors during her peak years, Hema Malini questioned the belief and said that payments during that period were comparatively modest. She explained that producers and directors appreciated her work, and her remuneration increased gradually as her popularity grew. However, she said the amounts she received were nowhere close to the fees earned by leading actors in the current film industry.
The actor said her mother managed her finances during the early years of her career and maintained a flexible approach while dealing with producers. According to Hema Malini, if a producer could not afford a higher payment for a project, her family did not insist on a particular amount. She recalled that whatever payment was offered was accepted without demanding a fixed fee, describing the approach as one based more on respect for the opportunity to work than financial expectations.

Hema Malini also said that the value she gained from her films was far greater than the money she earned at the time. She explained that the recognition, experience, and success associated with her movies became her biggest rewards. The actor said she never followed a practice of refusing projects unless a certain payment was guaranteed, adding that her priority was always being part of meaningful cinema.
Making her acting debut with the 1968 film Sapno Ka Saudagar, Hema Malini went on to become one of the most celebrated stars of Indian cinema. She achieved widespread popularity during the 1970s and 1980s through iconic films including Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay, Dream Girl, Satte Pe Satta and Baghban. Her comments offer a reflection on the changing economics of the film industry and how actor remuneration has evolved over the decades.
