Farhan Akhtar On Actor Exits Amid 'Don 3' Controversy: “Pattern Nowadays”
Farhan Akhtar discusses actors leaving films amid Don 3 controversy.
Farhan Akhtar has triggered fresh speculation around the controversy surrounding Don 3 after describing actors leaving films close to their shooting schedules as a “pattern nowadays”. Although the filmmaker-actor did not name Ranveer Singh or directly refer to Don 3, his remarks have drawn comparisons with the actor’s reported exit from the project shortly before filming was scheduled to begin.
Don 3 has remained in the spotlight following Ranveer Singh’s departure from the film, which reportedly led to a dispute with the makers over the circumstances surrounding his exit. The matter subsequently reached industry bodies, while reports of disagreements added uncertainty around the project and its production plans.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Farhan recalled an earlier situation involving Saif Ali Khan and his debut directorial film Dil Chahta Hai. He explained that a scheduling change involving another project put Saif in a difficult position and temporarily forced him to reconsider his participation in the film. Farhan recalled being deeply affected because he had not imagined another actor playing Saif’s role.

Farhan explained that the issue emerged roughly a month before filming was due to begin. Recalling the experience, he described the possibility of losing Saif as heartbreaking before joking that such last-minute departures appeared to have become increasingly common. His comments were not explicitly linked to Don 3, but the timing has prompted viewers to draw parallels with the recent controversy.
The Don 3 dispute previously escalated after the Federation of Western India Cine Employees announced a non-cooperation action against Ranveer over his decision to leave the project. The directive was subsequently withdrawn, while reports indicated that disagreements over financial losses associated with the production remained unresolved. The situation has added uncertainty around the film’s future and its eventual casting.
Farhan’s latest comments have therefore renewed discussion about the circumstances surrounding actors stepping away from projects shortly before production. While he did not directly identify any recent film or actor, his reference to a recurring pattern has been interpreted in the context of Don 3. The project, which was announced as the next instalment in the popular franchise, continues to await clarity over its production and casting plans.
