Despite Mixed Reactions, Jaat to Get a Sequel

Sunny Deol will return as Baldev Pratap Singh in Jaat 2

Sunny Deol's action drama Jaat is still in the theatres. It has got mixed reviews from critics. Its box-office performance too has been, at best, middling.

But that has not stopped its producers, Mythri Movie Makers and People Media Factory, from announcing its sequel, titled --- what else? --- Jaat 2. Directed by the same Gopichand Malineni, who helmed the first part, the sequel has been announced to be "bigger, bolder, and wilder." Sunny Deol will likely reprise his role as Baldev Pratap Singh, continuing the story of an outsider who challenges injustice and brutality in a terrorised village.  The details of the other cast and the story are still not known.

As per trade analysts, Jaat, which released on April 10, opened to Rs 9.5 crore in India and Rs 13 crore worldwide on its first day. A decent start. Overall, the film is unlikely to cross the Rs 100-crore mark, but it has reportedly done well in regions like Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana. Perhaps that may have been the reason for greenlighting its sequel.

The performances of Sunny Deol and Randeep Hooda and the high-octane action sequences have been welcomed, but the weaknesses in the narrative has been the film's undoing. Jaat was Sunny's first pan-India actioner, and also marked director Gopichand Malineni's Hindi-language debut. The film also features Regina Cassandra, Saiyami Kher, Vineet Kumar Singh, Prashant Bajaj, Zarina Wahab, and Jagapathi Babu in pivotal roles.

When will Jaat 2 will start shooting is also not clear. As of now, Sunny Deol is already committed to Border 2, the sequel to the hit 1997 war drama. He is also working in Lahore 1947, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. Produced by Aamir Khan, the movie also stars Preity Zinta.
