Colleagues, Leaders Pay Last Respects to Veteran Actor Satish Shah
Satish Shah passes away at 74; the film and TV fraternity join the family for last rites in Mumbai.
Hundreds gathered in Mumbai on Sunday morning to bid a final farewell to veteran actor Satish Shah, who passed away at 74 due to kidney-related complications, with the film and television fraternity turning out in full force for his last rites. The cremation took place at the Oshiwara Hindu Crematorium, where Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray paid his respects during the antim darshan at Shah’s residence in Andheri. Known for his impeccable comic timing in iconic sitcoms like Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi and Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, Shah left behind a legacy of laughter that transcended generations.
Colleagues from Sarabhai vs Sarabhai formed an emotional guard of honour: Ratna Pathak Shah, Sumeet Raghavan, Rajesh Kumar, Deven Bhojani, and producer Jamnadas Majethia (JD) were seen consoling family members, many visibly overwhelmed. Dilip Joshi (Jethalal from Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah), Johny Lever, Roopa Ganguly, Aanjjan Srivastav, Ashoke Pandit, Jackie Shroff, and director Kunal Kohli also attended, reflecting Shah’s vast cross-industry influence. Joshi, who shared screen space with Shah in multiple projects, was seen wiping tears as the pyre was lit.
Shah’s portrayal of the pompous, lovable Indravadan Sarabhai in the cult sitcom remains etched in public memory, alongside memorable roles in films like Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Main Hoon Na, and Kal Ho Naa Ho. His death came after prolonged illness; he had been undergoing dialysis for months. Tributes poured in on social media, with Rupali Ganguly writing, “Indu ji taught us how to laugh at ourselves—there will never be another,” while Amitabh Bachchan recalled Shah’s “unmatched wit and warmth” from their Main Azaad Hoon collaboration.
