BJP, Congress Clash Over Shah Rukh Khan’s National Award Timing
Parties trade accusations, debating whether award decision was merit-based or politically motivated.
Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s first National Film Award for Best Actor for his role in Jawan has ignited a political row between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress party. Former BJP MLA Raj Purohit claimed that Congress-led governments overlooked Khan for awards during their tenure, while the BJP recognized his talent purely on merit. Khan shared the Best Actor award with Vikrant Massey for 12th Fail at the 71st National Film Awards, held on September 23, 2025, in New Delhi, where President Droupadi Murmu presented the honors.
Purohit, speaking to PTI Videos, emphasized that the BJP does not judge Khan based on religion, countering allegations of caste or religious bias within the party. He argued that Khan’s award reflects the BJP’s commitment to unity and meritocracy, dismissing claims of discrimination. The National Film Awards, considered India’s most prestigious cinematic honors, recognized Jawan for its commercial success and social commentary, with Khan’s dual role earning widespread acclaim.
In response, Congress leader and Maharashtra Legislative Council member Bhai Jagtap accused the BJP of politicizing the award for electoral gains, particularly with upcoming assembly elections in Bihar. Jagtap questioned the timing, noting that Khan had not received a National Award in the past 11 years of BJP rule. “Why suddenly now? Is it because of Bihar elections or Maharashtra local body elections?” he told PTI Videos, calling Khan a cultural asset while criticizing the BJP for allegedly polarizing society and marginalizing Muslims.
