Adding Fuel to Fire! Anurag's Non-Apology to His Controversial Remarks

The filmmaker-actor continues to trigger online outrage

Anurag Kashyap has attempted a Mark Antony kind of apology. But it seems to be boomeranging on him badly.

The filmmaker cum actor who has now infamously moved to the South from Mumbai is at the centre of a kerfuffle after he made some uncalled for comments on Brahmins.

The controversy began when Kashyap responded to a comment on social media defending the Brahmin community with the statement, "I would urinate on Brahmins." The remark, which Kashyap later claimed was taken out of context, triggered a wave of backlash, with critics accusing him of disrespecting cultural values and promoting divisive rhetoric. Complaints were subsequently filed with the police in Delhi and Mumbai, alleging that Kashyap's comments were inflammatory and hurtful to the sentiments of the Brahmin community.

In response to the outrage, Kashyap came out with an apology on Instagram. But he seems to have been clever by half and getting all sarcastic and Shakespearean. It looked apology for apology, as it were. He stated, "This is my apology — not for my post, but for that one line taken out of context and the brewing hatred. No action or speech is worth your daughter, family, friends, and colleagues receiving rape and death threats." Kashyap also urged critics to direct their anger at him rather than involving his family.

The sly tone of the apology has done little to quell the controversy, with Union Minister Satish Chandra Dubey calling Kashyap a 'vile scumbag' and demanding a public apology. Dubey warned that Kashyap would 'find no peace' unless he issued a formal apology to the Brahmin community. Social media platforms have been flooded with reactions, ranging from calls for accountability to debates about freedom of expression and the role of artists in addressing sensitive issues.

Kashyap seems to be in a mood to draw attention to himself as his other recent comments online also suggest that. He claimed that Bollywood, which had been part of for decades, was toxic. He also said that he was now busier than SRK. All these suggest a pattern, doesn’t it?
