Anurag Kashyap Apologizes Amid Controversy Over Brahmin Remark in Phule Row

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has issued an apology following a backlash over his remarks concerning the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the Brahmin community amidst the Phule controversy. Kashyap took to Instagram to express regret, citing threats directed at his family and colleagues in response to his comments.

In his statement, Kashyap clarified that while he stands by his original post criticising censorship and Brahminical influence, his apology was specifically for a comment that was "taken out of context." He vehemently condemned the threats of violence towards his loved ones, emphasizing that no statement or action warrants such extreme responses.

"If anyone wishes to criticize me, they are free to do so, but my family should not be dragged into this," Kashyap asserted. He urged for restraint, especially towards the women in his life, stating, "Brahmins, spare the women. Such values are enshrined even in our scriptures, not just in orthodox interpretations."

The controversy erupted after objections from a section of the Brahmin community regarding the film ‘Phule’, which portrays the lives of social reformers Jyotirao Govindrao Phule and Savitribai Phule. The CBFC had initially requested several edits before granting the film a 'U' certificate, delaying its release to April 25.

An advocate in Mumbai has filed a formal complaint against Kashyap, calling for legal action. As of now, there has been no confirmation on whether the Mumbai Police have registered an FIR in response to the complaint.

‘Phule’, directed by Ananth Mahadevan and starring Pratik Gandhi and Patralekha, aims to highlight the Phules' battle against caste discrimination and gender inequality in Indian society.
