Amid Divorce, Celina Jaitly Says Every Woman Should Sign A Prenuptial Agreement

Celina Jaitly advocates prenuptial agreements amid ongoing divorce battle.

Actor Celina Jaitly has urged women to consider signing prenuptial agreements to protect their financial interests, as she continues her ongoing divorce proceedings with her estranged husband, Peter Haag. Speaking about her personal experiences, the former Bollywood actor alleged that she was pressured into transferring her assets during the marriage, leaving her financially vulnerable. Haag has not publicly responded to the allegations.

In a recent interview with India Today, Jaitly described the emotional and financial challenges she has faced during the separation. She claimed that her estranged husband forced her to transfer her assets, resulting in significant personal losses. The actor also alleged that she experienced domestic violence during the course of the marriage. These allegations have been made by Jaitly and have not been adjudicated by a court.

Reflecting on her experience, Jaitly said she now believes that women, particularly those who own personal property or have built financial independence before marriage, should protect themselves through legal safeguards such as prenuptial agreements. She remarked that while relationships often begin with love and trust, marital disputes can eventually become centred on financial assets. "Love boils down to assets," she said, urging women to be practical when entering into marriage.

Prenuptial agreements, commonly known as prenups, are legal contracts signed before marriage that outline how assets, liabilities and financial responsibilities will be handled in the event of separation or divorce. While such agreements are widely recognised and enforceable in several countries, their legal status varies across jurisdictions, and they are not routinely used in India. Legal experts often advise couples to understand the applicable laws in their country before relying on such agreements.

Jaitly's remarks have renewed discussions on financial planning and legal protections within marriage, particularly for women with independent careers or personal wealth. Advocates of prenuptial agreements argue that they provide clarity and reduce the scope for disputes during divorce proceedings, while critics contend that they may undermine trust at the beginning of a marriage. The debate has gained visibility as more public figures speak openly about their experiences with divorce and asset division.

The actor has largely stayed away from the film industry in recent years, focusing on her personal life and family. Her comments come at a time when her divorce proceedings remain ongoing, with the legal process yet to conclude. As the case continues, Jaitly has said she hopes her experience encourages other women to make informed legal and financial decisions before marriage, while also drawing attention to the importance of safeguarding individual rights and assets.
