Akshay Kumar Seeks Court Protection Against AI Deepfake Impersonations and Fake Content

Akshay Kumar moves Bombay High Court to block AI deepfake misuse of his identity.

Bollywood icon Akshay Kumar has approached the Bombay High Court to safeguard his "personality rights," citing rampant misuse of his name, image, voice, and mannerisms through AI-generated and deepfake content. On October 15, 2025, the Bhool Bhulaiyaa star’s legal team highlighted a surge in unauthorized exploitation across social media, websites, and e-commerce platforms, prompting a plea for judicial intervention. The court, presided over by Justice Arif S. Doctor, issued an ad-interim order to protect Kumar’s identity pending further hearings, signaling a landmark case in the fight against digital impersonation.

Kumar’s lawyer presented alarming examples, including a now-removed fake film trailer that falsely depicted him as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, amassing 20 lakh views. Additionally, a website offering a feature to generate speech mimicking Kumar’s voice has raised concerns about the malicious use of AI technology. Fake social media accounts soliciting endorsements in his name and counterfeit products sold under his identity further compound the issue, underscoring the scale of the violation against the actor’s public persona.

The case reflects growing anxieties about AI-driven cybercrimes, a concern Kumar recently addressed at the Cyber Awareness Month 2025 inauguration at Maharashtra Police Headquarters. There, he shared a disturbing incident involving his teenage daughter, Nitara, who was targeted with inappropriate messages during an online video game. Initially receiving polite messages, the conversation turned predatory when the other player asked for her gender and subsequently requested explicit images. Kumar emphasized the broader implications, stating, “This is also a part of cybercrime,” highlighting the urgent need for awareness and protection in the digital age.

Kumar’s legal action sets a precedent for public figures combating the misuse of their likeness in an era of advancing AI technologies. As deepfakes and digital fraud become increasingly sophisticated, his plea underscores the necessity for robust legal frameworks to protect personal identities. The Bombay High Court’s interim order offers temporary relief, but the ongoing case will likely influence future policies on digital rights and cybersecurity in India.
