Aamir Khan Expresses Concern For Sonam Wangchuk, Appeals To End Hunger Strike
Aamir Clarifies 3 Idiots Link, Supports Wangchuk's Health
Actor Aamir Khan has spoken about educator and activist Sonam Wangchuk's ongoing indefinite hunger strike, while also clarifying that his iconic character Rancho from the 2009 film 3 Idiots was not based on Wangchuk. The actor addressed the issue during a special appearance at the London Indian Film Festival on Thursday, where he attended the screening of his critically acclaimed film Lagaan. Aamir expressed concern about Wangchuk's health and said he hoped the activist would end his fast soon. For several years, audiences have drawn parallels between Sonam Wangchuk and the character of Ranchoddas "Rancho" Shamaldas Chanchad, played by Aamir Khan in 3 Idiots.
The comparison emerged because both the fictional character and Wangchuk are associated with unconventional approaches to education and challenging traditional learning methods. However, Aamir clarified that the character was not inspired by Wangchuk's personal journey or work. Addressing the long-standing speculation, Aamir said there was no direct connection between Rancho and Wangchuk. The actor acknowledged the similarities that led people to make the association but maintained that the film's character was a fictional creation. His clarification came as renewed attention focused on Wangchuk due to his ongoing protest and concerns surrounding his health.
Despite clearing up the misconception, Aamir expressed respect for Wangchuk's efforts and concern over his current condition. The actor said he was worried about the impact of an indefinite hunger strike on Wangchuk's health and hoped that he would decide to end the protest soon. His remarks reflected support for Wangchuk's work while emphasising the importance of his well-being.
Sonam Wangchuk is widely recognised for his contributions to education reform, innovation and sustainable development, particularly in Ladakh. He founded the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL), an institution focused on creating alternative approaches to higher education and addressing regional challenges through practical learning. His ideas about student-centred education and innovation have gained national and international recognition over the years.

The connection between Wangchuk and 3 Idiots became popular because of the film's central message. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, the movie challenged conventional education systems and highlighted the need for creativity, curiosity and practical knowledge. Rancho's character became a symbol of questioning rigid academic structures, which many viewers felt reflected aspects of Wangchuk's educational philosophy.
However, Aamir's latest comments highlight the difference between inspiration, resemblance and direct adaptation. While 3 Idiots shared themes associated with alternative education and questioning traditional methods, the actor confirmed that Rancho was not a portrayal of Wangchuk. The clarification aims to separate the fictional narrative of the film from the real-life work and activism of the educator.
The discussion took place during Aamir's appearance at the London Indian Film Festival, where Lagaan was screened as a special presentation. The 2001 film remains one of the most significant works of Indian cinema and received international recognition, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.
Aamir Khan's comments have once again brought attention to both Sonam Wangchuk's activism and the continuing cultural impact of 3 Idiots. While rejecting claims that the film was based on Wangchuk, the actor acknowledged the activist's contributions and urged him to consider his health amid his ongoing protest. The remarks have renewed public discussion about education reform, activism and the influence of cinema in shaping conversations around social issues.
