Aamir Khan Responds To Controversy Over Marriage With Gauri Spratt
Aamir Khan addresses questions surrounding his recent marriage.
Actor Aamir Khan has responded to the controversy surrounding his marriage to longtime partner Gauri Spratt, rejecting allegations of “love jihad” and addressing a religious ruling issued against the union. The actor clarified that his marriages have been conducted through civil procedures and said none of his wives converted to Islam.
Aamir and Gauri married on July 5 in a private ceremony held at his residence in Pali Hill, Bandra, Mumbai. The wedding was registered under the Special Marriage Act and was attended by around 150 close friends and family members. Aamir’s children Junaid, Ira, and Azad, along with Gauri’s son, were among those present at the ceremony.
The marriage drew public attention after Maharashtra BJP minister Nitesh Rane described the union as an example of “love jihad” and raised concerns about interfaith marriages involving public personalities. Separately, Maulana Ibrahim Hussain, the Shahi Chief Mufti of the Muslim Personal Darul Ifta, issued a fatwa stating that according to his interpretation of Islamic law, a Muslim man cannot marry a non-Muslim woman unless she converts.

Responding to the criticism in an interview with Rediff, Aamir said the allegations did not reflect the reality of his family’s approach toward religion. He highlighted that his family includes members from different religious backgrounds, including his sisters being married to Hindu men, his daughter being married to a Hindu, and his cousin Mansoor being married to a Christian.
Aamir further explained that his former marriages with Reena Dutta and Kiran Rao, as well as his marriage to Gauri, were solemnised through civil ceremonies and that none of the three women converted to Islam. He also stated that Gauri is Christian but is not a practising Christian. Commenting on the controversy, the actor said that public reactions around personal matters had become increasingly unusual.
The actor had introduced Gauri publicly earlier this year during celebrations for his 60th birthday. He revealed that the two had known each other for nearly 25 years before reconnecting and developing a relationship. Their marriage marks a new phase in Aamir’s personal life while continuing to attract discussion due to the attention surrounding interfaith relationships.
