Toyota Unveils Electric Version of Iconic Hilux Pickup for 2026

Toyota launches ninth-gen 2026 Hilux with first-ever electric version, new mild-hybrid diesel, and premium tech upgrades.

Toyota has officially unveiled the ninth-generation Hilux, ushering in a new era for the automaker’s legendary pickup truck. The 2026 Toyota Hilux now arrives not only with updated petrol and diesel powertrains but also as a fully electric model for the first time, marking Toyota’s debut body-on-frame EV. The company confirmed that the Hilux EV will launch in select global markets by the end of the year, while the internal combustion engine (ICE) variants will follow by mid-2026.

Built on the IMV architecture, the electric Hilux features a 59.2 kWh battery pack coupled with a dual-motor setup providing all-wheel drive capability. The front motor generates 205 Nm of torque, while the rear motor produces 268.6 Nm. This setup allows the Hilux EV to tow up to 1,600 kilograms and carry a payload of 715 kilograms, with a claimed driving range of around 240 km. Toyota, however, has not yet disclosed detailed charging times or range performance under load conditions.

The ICE lineup continues to feature Toyota’s tried-and-tested engines—a 2.8-liter turbo-diesel paired with a new 48V mild-hybrid system, and a 2.7-liter naturally aspirated petrol unit. These traditional powertrains retain the robustness that Hilux is known for, offering up to 1,000 kilograms of payload capacity and an impressive 3,500-kilogram towing capacity.

Styling updates give the 2026 Hilux a sharper, more modern appearance while preserving its muscular stance. The facelift includes a slim piano-black grille with bold TOYOTA lettering, sleeker LED headlamps, and a sculpted bumper with honeycomb detailing. The rear features redesigned tail lamps and a practical new bumper with an integrated side step. Inside, the cabin has undergone a complete overhaul with a more premium design. Twin 12.3-inch digital displays, a new multifunction steering wheel, ventilated seats, 360-degree camera, wireless phone charger, driver monitoring, and Safe Exit Assist all elevate the interior to modern standards.
