Army’s New Toyota Fortuner With Satellite Gear Seen in Action

Army’s new green Toyota Fortuner equipped for battlefield communication spotted in service.

A uniquely modified Toyota Fortuner has captured public attention after videos surfaced online showing the SUV in military green paint, confirming its induction for use by the Indian Army. Initially spotted across several viral clips, the modified vehicles have now been officially seen carrying “On Army Duty” papers on their windshields, affirming their deployment in active service. The vehicle was reportedly parked roadside during one such sighting, sparking curiosity and excitement among automobile enthusiasts and defense observers alike.

According to reports, these specially prepared Fortuners have been assigned to the Indian Army’s Corps of Signals, the key division responsible for ensuring secure battlefield communication and real-time data transmission. The modified vehicles have been fitted with satellite communication systems mounted on their roofs, enabling the establishment of tactical communication networks and battlefield connectivity even in remote terrains.

Externally, the SUVs sport a matte olive green finish paired with black door handles and gunmetal grey alloy wheels—classic military specifications. While interior details remain under wraps, it is expected that the cabin houses advanced communication consoles, batteries, and radio racks to support operations. Notably, India has opted for the Sigma 4 variant of the Fortuner, featuring a robust 4x4 drivetrain designed for superior off-road performance—an essential requirement for rugged defense mobility.

Under the hood, the Toyota Fortuner Sigma 4 retains its proven 2.8-liter, four-cylinder turbo diesel engine. The model delivers 204 PS of peak power and up to 500 Nm of torque (in the automatic version), ensuring both strength and reliability in challenging terrain. Reports also suggest that the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) system may have been removed to improve performance consistency in high-dust or high-altitude conditions.

The Indian Army’s decision to induct the Toyota Fortuner underscores a shift toward practical and locally available platforms for specialized roles. With rugged engineering, off-road capability, and modern communications integration, the Fortuner could soon become a familiar sight in India’s defense logistics and tactical convoys.
