Nissan Shifts To AI-Defined Vehicles With Major Expansion In EV And Hybrid Lineup
Nissan unveils AI-driven mobility strategy, expanding EVs, hybrids and autonomous technology across global lineup.
Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has unveiled a long-term strategic vision centred on artificial intelligence, electrification, and a streamlined global product lineup, marking a major shift toward what it calls “AI-Defined Vehicles” (AIDV). The company said the plan, titled “Mobility Intelligence for Everyday Life,” aims to make vehicles more intelligent, safer, and more integrated into daily living.
At the core of the strategy is the expanded use of AI across Nissan’s future lineup. The company plans to integrate its AI-driven driving and connectivity systems into nearly 90 percent of its vehicles over the long term. This includes the development of advanced driver assistance technologies and in-car AI systems designed to support navigation, safety, and everyday digital interactions.
Nissan also outlined its electrification roadmap, highlighting a diversified mix of powertrains including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and fully electric vehicles. Its e-POWER hybrid system will continue to serve as a bridge toward full electrification, offering electric-like driving performance without external charging. The company also confirmed plans for new hybrid and range-extended models developed through strategic partnerships.

As part of its future model rollout, Nissan plans to reduce its global vehicle lineup from 56 to 45 models, focusing on higher-performing segments and eliminating underperforming products. The company said this restructuring is intended to improve efficiency, increase investment in growth areas, and strengthen its global competitiveness.
Nissan has also reorganised its product strategy into four categories—Heartbeat, Core, Growth, and Partner—each reflecting different roles in its global portfolio. Upcoming models include updated versions of the X-Trail and Rogue Hybrid, a fully electric Juke EV, and region-specific offerings such as the Xterra for the US market and Skyline for Japan. The premium Infiniti brand will also see renewed focus with multiple new models planned, including hybrid SUVs and performance-oriented vehicles.
The company further said it is transforming its industrial model by shifting to architecture-led development based on shared platforms, powertrains, and software systems. This approach, it claims, will accelerate development timelines, improve cost efficiency, and increase scalability. Nissan said the strategy is aimed at building a more agile, technology-driven future as the global automotive industry rapidly transitions toward electrification and software-defined mobility.
