Maruti Suzuki Launches India's First Flex Fuel Car Ahead of World Environment Day
Maruti Suzuki launches India's first flex-fuel car ahead of World Environment Day on June 5.
India is set to witness a major milestone in its alternative fuel journey as Maruti Suzuki India launches the country's first flex-fuel car on Thursday. The launch comes a day ahead of World Environment Day and will take place in the presence of Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari and Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
The launch marks a significant step in India's efforts to promote ethanol-blended fuels and reduce dependence on conventional petrol. While the company has not officially revealed the model ahead of the event, industry speculation suggests the flex-fuel vehicle could be based on either the Maruti Suzuki WagonR or the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, both of which have previously been showcased as concept vehicles.
A flex-fuel vehicle is designed to operate on varying blends of petrol and ethanol, allowing drivers to use fuel mixtures with higher ethanol content than standard petrol vehicles. Such vehicles are expected to play an important role in supporting the government's ethanol-blending program while offering a cleaner and more sustainable mobility solution.

At present, India does not have a production-ready flex-fuel passenger car on sale. However, the two-wheeler segment has already begun adopting the technology. Recently, Hero MotoCorp introduced flex-fuel versions of the Hero Splendor Plus and Hero HF Deluxe, joining Suzuki Motorcycle India in the alternative-fuel space.
The newly launched Maruti Suzuki vehicle is expected to support ethanol blends ranging from E20 to significantly higher concentrations, helping lower carbon emissions and reduce fuel import dependence. Industry experts view the move as a crucial step towards wider adoption of alternative fuels in India's passenger vehicle market.
Further details regarding the car's price, mileage, specifications, and availability are expected to be announced during the official launch event later today. The announcement is likely to provide a clearer picture of how flex-fuel technology will be integrated into India's mass-market automobile segment.
