BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme Breaks Seven-Minute Barrier at Nurburgring

BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme becomes the first electric hypercar under seven minutes at Nürburgring Nordschleife.

BYD’s Yangwang U9 Xtreme has shattered records at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, becoming the first electric hypercar to lap the legendary 20.8-km “Green Hell” in under seven minutes with a blistering time of 6:59.157. The feat, achieved today, cements the Chinese luxury EV’s dominance in performance, following its earlier claim as the world’s fastest production car at 496.22 km/h. German racing veteran Moritz Kranz, with nearly 10,000 Nordschleife laps in GT competition, piloted the record run, leveraging the car’s advanced DiSus-X intelligent body-control system to maintain stability through the circuit’s 73 corners and 300-metre elevation changes.

Built on the groundbreaking e4 Platform—the world’s first mass-produced 1200V ultra-high-voltage architecture—the U9 Xtreme deploys four electric motors spinning at up to 30,000 rpm, generating a combined output exceeding 3,000 PS and a staggering 1,217 PS per tonne power-to-weight ratio. The vehicle integrates body-attitude control technology, allowing real-time suspension adjustments for both high-speed stability and track agility. For the Nürburgring assault, engineers fitted a redesigned cooling system, titanium-alloy carbon-ceramic brakes, and custom GitiSport eGTR PRO semi-slick tyres, optimising thermal management and grip under extreme loads.

The record underscores China’s rapid ascent in high-performance EVs, with Yangwang—BYD’s premium sub-brand—outpacing established rivals like Rimac and Pininfarina in both straight-line speed and circuit prowess. Unlike combustion-powered hypercars, the U9 Xtreme delivers instant torque and silent acceleration, redefining benchmarks without emissions. The Nordschleife lap, verified by official timing and independently witnessed, surpasses previous electric records by over five seconds and places the U9 Xtreme among the top 10 fastest production vehicles ever on the track, regardless of powertrain.

As global automakers race toward electrification, the Yangwang U9 Xtreme’s dual conquest of top speed and lap time signals a paradigm shift. With production underway and deliveries expected in 2026, the hypercar not only elevates BYD’s technological prestige but also challenges the supremacy of European and American performance icons. NDTV confirmed the record through official BYD statements and track data, marking a historic milestone for sustainable high-performance engineering.
