BMW i3 Neue Klasse Unveiled: 900 km Range, Beats Tesla Model Y Hands Down

BMW's new electric i3 sedan claims a 900 km range, surpassing the Tesla Model Y.

BMW has unveiled its latest electric sedan, the BMW i3 Neue Klasse, marking a significant step in the brand’s transition toward next-generation electric mobility. The new model is part of BMW’s Neue Klasse lineup and represents a major evolution of the iconic 3 Series platform in an all-electric form. Positioned as a premium performance sedan, the i3 introduces a fresh design language while retaining the core identity associated with the long-standing nameplate.

The new i3 stands out for its impressive claimed range of up to 900 km on the WLTP cycle, significantly surpassing competitors such as the Tesla Model Y, which offers around 500 km per charge. The vehicle is powered by a dual-motor setup, with one motor on each axle, delivering all-wheel-drive capability. Combined, the system produces 463 horsepower and 633 Nm of torque, placing the i3 firmly within the high-performance electric sedan category.

One of the most notable highlights of the i3 is its advanced charging capability. Built on an 800-volt architecture, the car supports ultra-fast DC charging of up to 400 kW. According to BMW, this enables the vehicle to gain up to 400 km of range in just 10 minutes of charging under optimal conditions. Additionally, the model offers modern energy solutions such as Vehicle-to-Load, Vehicle-to-Home, and Vehicle-to-Grid functionalities, enhancing its practicality and integration with energy ecosystems.

From a mechanical standpoint, the i3 is engineered to maintain the dynamic driving characteristics expected from the 3 Series lineage. It features a five-link rear suspension setup and optimised stabiliser bars designed to improve handling and stability. An optional adaptive M suspension further enhances ride quality and driving precision, ensuring that the vehicle performs well both in everyday conditions and during spirited driving.

In terms of design, the i3 adopts what BMW describes as a contemporary “2.5-box” structure, featuring a long wheelbase, short overhangs, and clean body lines that give it a sporty yet elegant stance. The front fascia introduces a more restrained version of BMW’s signature kidney grille, paired with a distinctive four-element lighting system. At the rear, a horizontal light signature enhances the car’s visual width and contributes to a cohesive, modern appearance.

Inside the cabin, the BMW i3 reflects a futuristic and technology-focused approach. The interior features a two-spoke steering wheel and BMW’s Panoramic Vision display, which projects key information directly into the driver’s line of sight. A large 17.9-inch central touchscreen controls most functions, complemented by an optional 3D head-up display for enhanced usability. With its combination of performance, range, and advanced technology, the i3 signals BMW’s intent to lead in the next generation of electric vehicles.
