Trump Sees Scope For Iran Breakthrough As Midterm Election Campaign Gains Momentum

Trump Signals Possibility Of Iran Agreement

US President Donald Trump has indicated that a diplomatic agreement with Iran could be reached, expressing optimism about negotiations even as tensions between Washington and Tehran remain unresolved. His remarks came ahead of the November 3 US midterm elections, which are expected to influence the political landscape in Washington. Trump suggested that a deal was possible despite the continuing disagreements over Iran's nuclear programme, regional security and restrictions imposed by the United States. The comments have drawn attention because any breakthrough could have significant implications for Middle Eastern stability, international relations and global energy markets.

Trump made the remarks in a post on his Truth Social platform on November 2 shortly before Americans were due to vote in the midterm elections. Referring to the decline in international oil prices, he said crude had fallen by nearly $10 per barrel because markets expected that another war with Iran could be avoided. He added that Tehran wanted a settlement as soon as possible and suggested that an agreement could be reached. However, the president did not provide details about the proposed arrangement or specify when an agreement might be finalised. The comments followed three consecutive days of indirect negotiations between American and Iranian representatives in Doha, Qatar.

Qatari mediators have been facilitating discussions aimed at ending the eight-month conflict and finding an arrangement to restore normal shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said negotiations were progressing intensively but maintained that the outcome depended on Washington's willingness to respond to Tehran's demands. Iran has also indicated that it wants the United States to lift its naval blockade of Iranian ports and release frozen Iranian assets as part of a settlement. A major issue in the negotiations is the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway through which a significant proportion of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas shipments normally pass.

Iran has offered to reopen the route under specific conditions, including arrangements for ending hostilities and lifting restrictions on its maritime trade. Tehran has reportedly proposed reducing the implementation period for an agreement from seven days to two days. However, the two countries continue to disagree over the terms, particularly the future of Iran's nuclear programme and the security guarantees required to prevent another confrontation. US Vice President JD Vance also expressed optimism about the possibility of reaching an agreement. He said the administration had held several productive conversations with Iranian representatives and believed there was potential for a negotiated settlement.

Trump has repeatedly maintained that Iran must never be allowed to develop or possess a nuclear weapon, while Tehran has rejected several American demands concerning its nuclear activities. The negotiations therefore face significant challenges despite the latest positive statements from Washington. Trump's comments also come amid domestic political pressure over the economic consequences of the conflict. Higher fuel prices have become an important concern for American voters ahead of the midterm elections, with the war contributing to uncertainty in international energy markets. The sharp decline in crude prices following renewed hopes of a diplomatic agreement offered some relief to markets. However, any failure in negotiations could reverse the trend and increase concerns about energy supplies, shipping costs and inflation.

Despite expressing confidence in a possible agreement, Trump has not completely ruled out military action against Iran. His administration has maintained that diplomatic efforts remain the preferred route, while continuing to emphasise American security demands. The negotiations are also taking place against the backdrop of pressure from Israel, whose Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly urged Washington to consider further strikes against Iranian targets. With both countries maintaining competing demands, the immediate focus remains on whether mediators can secure an agreement that ends hostilities and restores maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
